Länssjukhuset Ryhov

System, construction and relationship document for extension / Länssjukhuset, Ryhov

Region Jönköping County is now making a major investment in improving and modernizing Ryhov County Hospital in Jönköping. First in the long-term plan is the construction of house D1. There are four state-of-the-art care wards and several receptions such as mammography and dialysis. Liljewall, together with NCC and Region Jönköping County, has made a system-to-relationship document for the extension of house D1.

In the main stairwell, the floor plan is tied together with a dark color to facilitate orientation. At the same time, the dark color gives focus to the stairs to encourage activity and healthy choices in everyday life.

Prerequisites and assignments

The project called “House D1” actually consists of two buildings, building D1 and building D2 with six and seven floors respectively and an area of 34,000 square meters. The buildings are connected to the hospital to the north and are accessed via the existing hospital main entrance. The entrance level in House D1 is for reception and day care, including mammography and dialysis. The floors below and above house two new emergency care departments and two care departments for medicine and associated day care, respectively. At the top of the building there are training rooms for methodology and medical training run by Linköping University.

All nursing rooms are single rooms with their own RWC. A patient lying in bed is protected from view by the high part of the window, while the low part gives the opportunity for nice views. Natural materials have been important to create warmth and details in ash tie the room together.
The day room is a hub for all care departments. These have proven to be particularly important in single rooms to reduce the patient's loneliness and increase mobility. By connecting to the outdoor environment via the balcony, natural materials and calm colors, an attractive meeting place for patients is created here.

“In House D1, the goal has been to create a good care environment with a focus on the well-being of patients and staff.”

Johan Brendelökken, ingenjör, Liljewall

The interior colors have been chosen to create a living and human environment. The colors also facilitate orientation through the house, each floor has its own color theme.
The medical school has the best corner location in the building. The graduation hall has modern technology that facilitates teaching both on site and remotely. Here, the focus has been on creating a warm and inviting atmosphere using natural materials and elaborate details.

The new extension has also received a centrally located Småland pine forest. Based on SLU’s latest research on the importance of the outdoor environment for the health and well-being of both patients and staff, they have tried to include as many environmental qualities as possible; clear seasonal changes, natural materials, rippling water and places for both silence and social gatherings. Great importance has also been placed on creating a strong connection with the green from inside the hospital bed.

Ryhov County Hospital was awarded the Jönköping City Building Prize 2020

The partnering project Hus D1 — a prized success story for Liljewall and NCC

That this project has been able to be carried out at such a high pace is a result of efficient planning, which has also meant that costs have been kept down. The key to success is spelled out partnering.

The building is designed to instill security. The windows and playfully protruding "glass boxes" let in light, creating nice views of the greenery.
