Icehotel Jukkasjärvi

Icehotel Jukkasjärvi

Lighting design / Jukkasjärvi

In the village of Jukkasjärvi, 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, we find perhaps one of the world's most famous ice hotels. Ice magic and experiences of the highest class are created here every year. In recent years, liljewall has created the lighting concepts for many of the hotel's art suites. Each suite is completely unique with an individual theme and is hand-sculpted by carefully selected creators and artists from all over the world. Of course, light has a decisive importance for the atmosphere and feeling conveyed in the rooms.

Illuminating ice and snow is a complex task. The ice blocks, always from the Torne River, can look very different. Sometimes the ice blocks are completely shiny without any oxygen bubbles – while others have more structure through veils and cracks.

Inspiring collaboration with artists from around the world

Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi is an attraction for visitors from all over the world and an artistic team building event at an extremely high level. During three intensive weeks in late November and December, ambitious, creative and dedicated creators, set designers and entrepreneurs gather to create this year’s icy experiences.

During the 2022-2023 opening of Icehotel 33, we worked, together with Hannes Mattson Gusfors, with artists Emilie Steele and Sara Steele for “Maighdeann-Róin”, Sthlm and Berlin-based ice sculptor Henkia for “Frö”, landscape architects Elin Julin and Ida Mangsbo for “Galanthus Nivalis” and Slovakian architect and designer Lukas Petko for “Hidden Milan”.

Seed designed by Henkia.

Seed

The inside of a seed. The potential before creation. It is a protection. It is light. It is life. It is Seed. The lighting creates a cozy, comfortable and safe feeling. The room is illuminated with white crisp light combined with old pink accents that lead the eye to the room’s detailing.

Galanthus Nivalis designed by Elin Julin and Ida Mangsbo.

Spring is coming soon and in this suite the visitor encounters it in macro format. Snowdrops, crocuses, spring flowers, sparkling grape hyacinths and sheer blades of grass create a feeling of being in the middle of a blooming spring meadow. The lighting creates a dull, yet soft spring feeling that lets the sculptures speak. The flowers’ pistils of ice are illuminated with white light and the chairs a blue tone to create a nice color harmony in the room.

“In the otherwise dark environment north of the Arctic Circle, light is a must for visitors to be able to orient themselves – but of course also as a crucial mood-creator.”

Icehotel 30, 2019-2020

At the opening of Icehotel in December 2019, we had the privilege of working on the lighting for the three art suites; Bone Room designed by Rob Harding, White Santorini designed by Jaeyual Lee and Haemee Han, and Golden Ice, designed by Nicolas Triboulot and Jean-Marie Guitera.

Bone Room

Bones – an essential part of the living, and the last, earthly imprints of the dead. The Bone Room highlights the beauty found in the cycle of life. Here, the beautiful ice sculptures are highlighted, which also play the main role in the room. The veils and cracks of the bone-like sculptures create a dynamic texture that is highlighted and enhanced by the light. A white light was chosen for a clean and crisp feel. On the walls, the circular patterns that adorn the arched ice walls are accentuated, and which also create an optical illusion for the visitor. These patterns were carved into the walls by a specially made tool for exact precision. Finally, the floor and sleeping area are framed by luminous LED strips seamlessly integrated.

Golden Ice

Without moving you are taken on a journey through the golden light, into another reality. Like modern-day alchemists, they have captured the northern lights and managed to create endless reflections. Welcome to a golden, glamorous ice dream. In Golden Ice you are surrounded by over 400 hand-sculpted ice prisms, each of which has been applied to the walls to give a sparkling and luxurious impression. Behind them, gold foil has been applied, which we illuminated to give the prisms their shimmering and eye-catching accent – and the room its warm frame.

White Santorini

High on a volcanic island, far out in the Aegean Sea, stands an ancient, mythical city with houses that sparkle white in the warm, Mediterranean sun. High above the Arctic Circle, deep inside a hotel made of ice, the same city has been recreated – with houses that still sparkle white, but this is where the similarities end and the paradoxes begin. White Santorini plays and experiments with contrasting materials and proportions, whimsical and fun, while at the same time honoring its Greek original. Here the vision has been to create a white Santorini mountain, illustrated here by levels of ice adorned with small windows. These windows are naturally eye-catching by being lit with both white light, and white light combined with faint blue filters to, in some of them, create a cooler blue glow.
