In the scenic Sälenfjällen mountains liljewall has been commissioned by ICA Fastigheter to design a new ICA Supermarket entirely in solid wood. The full focus is on sustainability and the goal is a modern grocery store in the highest environmental class, Miljöbyggnad Gold. The architecture is inspired by the mountain settlements in Dalarna and the material choices are based on the nature found on the site.

A larger store
The new store, owned and managed by ICA Fastigheter, replaces the smaller ICA Nära Lindvallen to respond to the increasing mountain tourism. On an area of 1400 square meters, a full-scale fresh food range is offered and significantly better parking options than before. The design is inspired by nature. The tree-like pillars (y-beams) are the first thing you encounter when you enter the entrance.
Sustainable construction
The large gable motif marks the main entrance and the wooden structure is exposed through the facade glass, whose pillars bring to mind tree crowns. Like a lantern, the entrance lights up the place during the dark hours of the year and gives visitors a warm and welcoming feeling. The facade is clad in Swedish, horizontal glulam panels and the house’s joints have been reinforced with vertical panels – all painted in black Falu Rödfärg. The entrance plinth is covered with Offerdalsschiffer, which also reinforces the building’s mountain character.
ICA’s first solid wood store is aiming for the highest environmental certification – Miljöbyggnad Gold.
