Renovation and new construction / Bandhagen, Stockholm
A significant renovation, reconstruction and new construction of Bäckahagens Skola primary school is currently being carried out, to adapt the premises to a modern school with a capacity for around 1,100 students. The students will soon have access to a new kitchen and dining room, newly equipped classrooms, and new craft, nature orientation and home science rooms. The original school buildings, which were built during the years 1954–1976, are now green-classified and great consideration has been given to the culturally and historically valuable environment.

Culturally and historically valuable environment
Bäckahagens Skola consists of several building volumes that are interconnected and surround the schoolyard. The main building, together with the long, narrow buildings, originally dates from the early 1950s. In the 1960s, a connecting building was added and the school buildings were connected into one unit. The detached sports hall was also built at this time.
The design of the new building has been inspired by the older school buildings, with long facades in red brick but with a more modern and varied window arrangement. The gable facades, which open up towards the green hills, are designed with glass and dark grey sheet metal, and reflect the window motif in the main building’s light hall. The cross-section is similar to the existing school buildings but the volume is broken in two places to create interesting spaces for the schoolyard and direct the views from the classrooms towards the green. The brick screen roofs and earthenware walkways show the way into the building.
The business
Bäckahagens Skola is a primary school for grades F–9 whose student capacity is planned to be increased from 750 to 1,100 students. The operation also needs a larger kitchen and dining room that meets today’s work environment requirements. To accommodate this, a new school building is being built in the schoolyard. The dining room and the large kitchen are located on the ground floor adjacent to the site’s only possible access for car traffic. On the other floors there are dormitories and teaching rooms for younger students. The fan rooms are located in the attic under the gable roof.
The school is a pilot school for movement projects and works actively with movement during both class time and breaks. After the renovation and expansion, the school will be able to accommodate around 1,100 children.
